‘Devil’ made her do it
By Lisa | November 4, 2007
from bostonherald.com:
Marisa Tomei’s character in “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead” rolls in the hay with two brothers, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke.
The nudity - no big deal.
“Well, it was very much something when I began in my 20s that if you wanted to be a respected actress that is something you didn’t do. And then I was surprised that it came up now at this point in my life,” she laughed. “I figured to do it now better than another 10 years from now, too.”
But Tomei, 42, does have one issue. “I was just disappointed that they paid the guys a helluva lot more than they paid me, and I was the one who was naked! That p—– me off,” she said, laughing.
As Gina, a trophy wife bored by her marriage to Hoffman, Tomei won raves from veteran director Sidney Lumet (“Dog Day Afternoon,” “Serpico”).
“Ever since ‘My Cousin Vinny,’ I just thought she’s one of the best we’ve got,” Lumet said. “She’s also, and this was no small part of wanting her for the movie, completely uninhibited in terms of nudity and things like that. The last thing that I needed was an actress who was like, ‘Oh, God, how are we going to shoot this?’ and all of that. Off goes the robe and it’s like, ‘Let’s go to work.’ That’s so valuable, I can’t tell you, because it relaxes everybody.”
