Brief Marisa interview
By Lisa | February 6, 2008
‘Vinny’ star sweet on sweet potato pie, but grits hard to swallow
From her early days on TV shows like As The World Turns and A Different World, to her Academy Award-winning performance in the classic movie hit, My Cousin Vinny, New York native Marisa Tomei remains one of Hollywood’s busiest and most acclaimed stars. Throughout February, The Barilla Celebrity Italian Table Cookbook is available online for no charge at www.celebrityitaliantable.com. As the world’s premiere maker of pasta, Barilla will donate $1 to America’s Second Harvest, up to $100,000, for every person who downloads this book, which is filled with tasty recipes from your favorite celebs. Look for Tomei in upcoming movies, and starring in the Broadway revival of Top Girls by Caryl Churchill, which will open May 7 at the Biltmore Theatre in New York.
Q: You would be hard-pressed to meet anyone who doesn’t enjoy Italian food. What is its universal appeal?
A: The universal appeal of Italian food is probably its simplicity and love of and reliance on fresh ingredients. Also, Italians are pretty to look at in the kitchen! I’m thrilled to be sharing my Italian heritage, and one of my favorite easy dishes, pasta with pancetta and truffle paste, for the Barilla Celebrity Italian Table Cookbook to support America’s Second Harvest in its fight against hunger across the United States.
Q: Had you ever eaten grits before the classic breakfast counter scene in My Cousin Vinny? Do you have any favorite Southern foods?
A: No, I had not eaten grits before. When I finally had them, they reminded me of the farina that I had as a child. Southern favorites are the pies, especially sweet potato.
Q: Any special foods/beverages you “must have” in your dressing room/trailer on set?
A: Water, water, water.
Q: A favorite movie scene that involved dining?
A: The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover. The scene where she serves up her husband to all the guests for dinner.
Q: Is the pizza in New York City the best, period?
A: Well, the pizza in Naples, Italy, is pretty spectacular! In New York I like Joe’s and Di Fara.
